$1 million was authorized as part of the Congressional House Bill H11485 in FY1999 for an engineering study and socioeconomic analysis of the Going-to-the-Sun Road and the formulation and administration of the Going-to-the-Sun Road Advisory Committee. The first Citizen's Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting was held on February 29-March 2, 2000, in Kalispell, MT. A second meeting was held on February 29-March 2, 2000, in Kalispell, Montana. A second meeting was held on September 25-26, 2000, in West Glacier, Montana. A construction contract was awarded in 2000 to A-1 Construction of Kalispell, MT, for emergency repair work on historic guardwalls along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. This work is currently scheduled for two years and will not result in any road closures. MK Centennial, a Denver-based international consulting firm with expertise in high mountain construction and rehabilitation, was awarded the NPS contract for engineering and socioeconomic analysis to support the Glacier National Park and the Citizen's Advisory Committee in the long-term rehabilitation of the road. Glacier National Park has requested funding from the NPS to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to accompany the proposed Going-to-the-Sun Road plan. The EIS will serve as the decision document for the rehabilitation/ reconstruction of the Going-to-the-Sun Road including engineering and construction as well as any transportation visitor use or socio-economic enhancements. Glacier National Park and the Parks' primary concessionaire, Glacier Park, Inc. are pursuing the restoration of the existing red bus fleet (33 vehicles). Funding for a visitor use/transportation study and a cultural landscape study was received in 2000. MK Centennial is preparing both studies. |
