A committee of 17 members has been established as the Going-to-the-Sun Road Advisory Committee to provide recommendations to Glacier National Park on the rehabilitation of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The committee is comprised of a wide variety of expertise and backgrounds including the Blackfeet Nation; the Confederated Salish-Kootenai Nation; local government representation from the surrounding area, both east and west of the park; a representative appointed by the Governor of Montana; local business representatives from the surrounding area, both east and west of the park; a representative with national tourism experience; a representative with engineering expertise of a national reputation; cultural resource representative with a national perspective, citizen-at-large representation, representation of economic expertise of a national reputation, a representative from the Province of Alberta, Canada, reflecting international aspects of the park and the international impact of this undertaking.

The Advisory Committee met February 29, 2000 through March 2, 2000 in Kalispell, Montana to begin deliberations on recommendations to Glacier National Park in managing future rehabilitation/reconstruction of the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

At this meeting the committee recommended:

  • Conduct an inventory and analysis of existing studies with recommendations for additional studies and cost estimates for those studies to the committee through the Glacier National Park.
  • Advised Glacier National Park to coordinate marketing and public information tasks with other organizations.
  • Establish a public website with up-to-date road rehabilitation information.
  • Coordinate with other federal, state, provincial and local road agencies to schedule road improvements in an optimal manner.
  • Enhancement of Glacier National Park's interpretative programs which could be a distinct change in alternatives for the visitor.
  • Include statement in deliverables on recommendations for operation and maintenance to protect the capital investment.
  • The Advisory Committee met again September 25 and 26, 2000 in West Glacier, Montana. This meeting included a review of the condition of the Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR), a status report on the project, a public involvement plan presentation and creation of committee work groups to provide input into the project.

 

The next Citizens Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled for November 15, 2001 at the Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish, Montana
