New Slides - May 13, 2003

Chris Lundy, Glacier National Park Avalanche Specialist

Snow and Avalanche Observations:
As expected, numerous loose snow avalanches hit the road on the west side over the weekend; these Class 2.5 slides were slightly larger in magnitude than those that occurred on the east side. Paths that covered the road with debris include First and Second Chute Below the Arches, Triple Arches, Chute Above the Arches, and about eight slides in The Slopes. Combined, these avalanches buried approximately 1300 linear feet of the GSTR that had already been plowed. Many additional sluffs were observed that came short of hitting the road and on the adjacent peaks. Cloudy skies, light rain, and warm temperatures overnight made for a wet, mushy snow surface this morning, but without any solar input, the snow stayed put and no avalanche activity was observed during the day.
