A day hike to Avalanche - March 26, 2005

 


Currently, the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open to Lake McDonald Lodge. It is a 6 mile hike up the road to Avalanche.


This photo was taken around Sacred Dancing Cascade Falls. Snow depth was 1-2 inches.


Mountain lions are elusive animals that are rarely seen.
Footprints however, provide evidence that they are active.
This photo was taken on the Going-to-the-Sun Road just east
of Sacred Dancing Cascade Falls.

In the summer when the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open, Avalanche is a busy and popular destination. In early Spring, it is a quiet spot where one can expect to hear the sounds of Varied Thrushes and the wind blowing through this old growth forest.


Snow blankets the trailhead to Avalanche Lake.


The trickling sounds of water running through Avalanche Gorge breaks the silence of the calm and still forest.


Snow blankets the boardwalk of the Trail of the Cedars. Deer tracks
provide evidence of recent visitors down this scenic portion of the trail.
