Change and Adaptation - March 3, 2006

Animals and plants are not the only ones undergoing change and adaptation this winter. Visitors that physically visit the park, and virtual visitors who visit online, are slowly changing the scene at Glacier. Glacier's staff recognizes and adapts to the changing needs of our visitors. Today, staff worked on a couple of projects that will hopefully add value to our visitors' experience in Glacier National Park.

The Lake McDonald Web cam remains one of the most popular Web cams in Glacier and in the NPS. Every morning, millions of people wake up to visit this Web cam to see what Glacier looks like. When our cameras go on the fritz, we hear about it, and we do our best to keep them online. Today, Glacier's IT Specialist works on the Web cam against a picturesque backdrop.

Last year, new static exhibits funded by the Glacier Natural History Association were installed on the walls in the Apgar Visitor Center, giving glimpses of Glacier's natural and cultural resources. Today, a new 14 foot exhibit of Lake McDonald was installed behind the information desk.

Returning visitors to Apgar Visitor Center will notice something new this season, information kiosks funded by The Glacier Fund.

The visitor center can be a busy place during the summer as Park Interpreters provide information to over 1,200 visitors daily. Information kiosks have been installed to help visitors receive information on busy days. We also recognize that some people now like to receive information digitally, so Web pages on the kiosks accommodate those visitors. Two electronic flat panel displays have also been installed and will scroll through trip planning information, providing up-to-the-minute information on campgrounds, weather, and the Going-to-the-Sun Road to name a few.
