Outreach programs are available (in your school) from January 2, 2004, through March, 2004. Contact the park for availability and programs. Special programs are available for your specific grade and the Virginia SOLs (such as for high school students) upon request in advance. Contact Park Ranger Roberta Samuel at 804-224-1732 ext 228 or by email at roberta_samuel@nps.gov . Outreach programs for schools that cannot visit the park include the programs listed on the Education page or a special program such as: You Can Be Like George Washington This program was developed in response to a bill passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 1999, requiring each local school board to establish a character education program in its schools. This program can be used as the Post-Visit Lesson for the k-2 When George Washington Was A Child. You Can Be Like George Washington focuses on George as a teenager. The program emphasizes responsibility for homework (encourages reading), teaches respect (the Golden Rule), self-control (discipline), trustworthiness (reputation), and citizenship through George Washington's own experiences as a young man. Young Washington came from a single parent home with limited income. He had a fierce temper and a limited education. George Washington overcame these obstacles to become the greatest figure in American History. The problems George Washington faced as a teenager are the same problems faced by young people today. This program is based on the premise that each student can be like George Washington in character. You Can Be Like George Washington encourages students to demonstrate character traits that shaped the "Father of Our Country." Logistics | Making Your Reservation | Education Home Page
