  • George Washington Birthplace National Monument is located on Popes Creek Road (Route 204); off Virginia Route 3 in Westmoreland County. The park is 38 miles east of Fredericksburg, 16 miles east of the U.S. Route 301 and Route 3 intersection, and 12 miles west of Montross.
  • Complete the Make Your Reservation form as soon as possible. Spring school season fills up very early. We conduct two programs per day unless staffing permits additional program offerings. Education programs are offered Tuesday through Friday from September through mid-November and March through mid-June. The maximum students per program and the length of each education program are:

When George Washington was a Child
    • 60 Students Maximum (20 students/group)
    • Program Length: 1 hour 30 minutes

    The Washingtons in Virginia History
    • 60 Students Maximum (30 students/group)
    • Program Length: 1 hour 30 minutes

How Math and Science Changed George Washington’s Life

  • Outreach programs are available (in your school) January through March. Contact the park for availability and programs.
  • George Washington Birthplace needs a letter requesting a fee waiver for your educational visit. Please mail your request as soon as possible. Your letter should be on official stationary and signed by an authorized school representative. Educational programs at George Washington Birthplace are provided at no cost to the schools with an official letter.
  • Chaperones traveling with the students are free. The park recommends 1 chaperone per 5 to10 students. However, parents or other relatives driving separately (not traveling on the bus or school vehicle) with additional family members will have to pay the entrance fee. The entrance fee is $4.00 per person age 17 and older (children are free). National Park and Golden Passports are accepted. Teachers and chaperones are responsible for their students’ conduct while at the park.
  • Please arrive prior to the specified time. School groups are scheduled throughout the day. If a school group arrives late, the program may be shortened to maintain park scheduling.
  • Orientation begins at the Visitor Center.
  • Most Parks As Classrooms educational programs are conducted in the Historic Area. Do not feed or pet the animals. Do not lean or climb on the rail fences.
  • Only restrooms near the Historic Area are in the Visitor Center. Please use these restrooms from the outside entrance (left side).
  • Nature Trail (one mile long) is near the picnic grounds (turn right), on the way to the Washington burial grounds. Do not wander off the trail.
  • Picnic grounds have restrooms that are normally open April to November.
  • Potomac River beach (no swimming allowed) is past the Washington burial grounds, at the end of the road.
  • Remember–this is a National Park. All natural and archeological items are protected including shark’s teeth, shells and pottery shards. Leave No Trace: take only pictures and leave only footprints.
