When George Washington Was A Child Students engage in hands-on activities as they compare everyday colonial life in Virginia with their lives today at several park sites, including Washington’s birthsite, the Memorial House, colonial kitchen, craft shop and the farm. Park Rangers, dressed in Colonial costume, perform demonstrations and tell stories which emphasize the difference between the roles and lifestyles of the gentry, servants and slaves in the colonial community environment. Comparisons in food preparation, communication styles, crafts and modes of transportation help students appreciate the huge changes in their modern living from early colonial days. A pre-visit education package is sent to the school. Primary Virginia Standards of Learning: History/Social
