ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

"How Math and Science Changed George Washington's Life" has been a team effort by the National Park Service-George Washington Birthplace National Monument and Richmond County Public Schools. Funding has been provided by Exxon Corporation through the National Park Foundation and National Park Service "Parks as Classrooms" education program.

"How Math and Science Changed George Washington's Life" includes a teacher guide and student workbook, developed to reflect the curriculum including the National Science Education Standards and the Virginia Standards of Learning for math and science. The workbook includes a description of George Washington's childhood, his education and beginning in surveying, math exercises, and science activities. These exercises and activities include teacher lesson plans to use in the classroom. After the teacher has covered the required principles to conduct a survey, a site visit is scheduled. The visit includes a tour of the park and this educational program based on eighteenth century surveying. Students discuss and compare the natural landscape of the eighteenth century with the present landscape. The park's role in protecting the natural resources and stewardship are discussed by the students. The students conduct an 18th century survey and compute the acreage of the survey at the park.

Follow-up activities and exercises in the students' workbook conclude the program. These activities are for teachers to use in class after the park visit. Students learn through hands-on experiences from the program "How Math and Science Changed George Washington's Life". The math and science skills taught with the workbook are applied in the real world when the students visit the park and step into Washington's shoes to conduct the survey. This educational program focuses on George Washington studying geometry and learning to survey.
