High Chest of Drawers

Acc.# 95, Cat.# 382.

History

Also known as a highboy in America. This piece is an American William and Mary style dating to 1700. It is made of walnut. It was made in the Dismal Swamp area of Virginia.

The highboy was used in part because many Georgian style colonial homes did not have closets. Closets qualified as taxable rooms.
