Downstairs Guest Chamber

The guest chamber was offered to friends or travelers who came to stay at the plantation.  Colonial customs encouraged guests to stop off at these remote plantations along the tidewater rivers and bays.  This was a means to alleviate boredom, gain news of the outside world, and offer refined hospitality.

This bed is of the American Federal style and dates to 1750.  The light wood has been painted with homemade ocre.  This is considered one of the rarest pieces in the collection.
