Upper Hall

A focal point of the upper hall is this reproduction 1740s era Dutch style day bed.  Also known as a "gout couch", "Grecian couch", or "fainting couch".   Women who had servants tighten their corsets often would have the air in their lungs reduced through the constriction of the corset and would be prone to pass out or faint.  This couch provided the perfect resting spot.
