South Chamber or Children's Room

The children's room represents the modest surroundings that colonial children experienced.  This room also represents a classroom setting.  Plantations relied on live in tutors to educate the master's children.  George Washington, unlike his eldest half-brothers was not afforded the opportunity to attend any formal school.  His education was conducted by a tutor.  Tutors were mostly indentured servants.  Of all servant positions, the tutor's was ranked the highest, and in some instances tutors were so well received that they actually married into the gentry family.

The majority of the furnishing in this room are 20th century reproductions.
