Park Planning

CURRENT NEWS

November 2005: The Gettysburg Cyclorama has closed to complete its removal from the Cyclorama Center. The painting will be taken down panel by panel and taken to a facility for further examination and cleaning by conservators. The new home of the cyclorama, scheduled to open in 2007, will feature the painting with it's restored skyline and foreground.

Work has begun at the site of the new museum and visitor center.

The next phase of tree cutting to restore historic vistas on the battlefield is underway, with the removal of non-historic growth west of Big Round Top and south of Devil's Den on the historic Slyder Farm.

Gettysburg National Military Park has released a Statement of Findings for Executive Order 11990 (Protection of Wetlands) for Landscape Rehabilitation projects in the park. The park’s 1999 General Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement calls for the rehabilitation of both the significant large-scale and small-scale elements of the park’s historic landscape, including the pattern of open fields and wooded areas. The project will return the fields of fire and the views that prevailed during the battle of Gettysburg, and allow park visitors to understand how the armies moved across the landscape. The purpose of the proposed action is to rehabilitate the portions of the battlefield that figured prominently in the defense of Big and Little Round Top, Culp’s hill, and areas northwest of the Borough of Gettysburg. All interested agencies, organizations, and groups are encouraged to read the statement. The document is available for public information for 30 days, ending December 23, 2005.

THE GENERAL MANAGEMENT PLAN

National Park Service Northeast Regional Director Marie Rust signed the Record of Decision, completing final approval of the "General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (GAMIN) for Gettysburg National Military Park" in December, 1999. The Regional Director’s decision clears the way for implementation of the plan that will result in the rehabilitation of the Gettysburg battlefield, and sets forth an operating procedure with clear-cut goals for the National Park Service at Gettysburg. A copy of the General Management Plan is available by writing to: Superintendent, Gettysburg National Military Park, 97 Taneytown Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325

NEW VISITOR CENTER PLANS
The Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum Foundation

One major element of the new General Management Plan is the cooperative agreement between the National Park Service and the Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum Foundation for the construction of a new Museum and Visitor Center, completely updated to house not only visitor facilities, but the park's extensive archival and museum collections. For more information on the plan, the building, and the progress of construction plans, visit The New Museum and Visitor Center Planning Pages.

The Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum Foundation now has a web site about the project and their fund raising efforts at http://www.gettysburgfoundation.org/
