POLITICS AS USUAL
IN RECENT DISCUSSIONS OF WAR NEWS

from The Gettysburg Compiler- It seems that our friends at the Democratic "Compiler" are taking some of the more honorable Republicans of this county to task for recent statements made by them at rallies and in this paper. "While the Republicans are calling Democrats Copperheads, and recommending, as a war measure, the hanging of all who criticize the acts of the Administration, they should bear in mind that if their present hanging creed had been put into force during the war of 1812 and the Mexican War, when Democratic administrations were in power, there would not now be left alive more than enough Republicans to form a regiment."

Our journalistic friends should remember that the current administration's war efforts depend on support from both the Republican AND the Democrats who now sit in congress. Lest it be said that treacherous statements against the policies of President Lincoln and the pursuit of the Union Cause are both foolish and unhealthy.

The Compiler's Democrats go on to say, "If the schemes of despotism adopted by this administration are once carried out; even the poor tools who are now advocating and pressing it, will be as great sufferers as others. Once we establish tyranny, and we shall all be in the same boat... those who now seem to desire it will be among the first victims."

Come now! It is not the purpose of the president or the Republican Party to instill a dictatorship in this administration. We only seek the goal of Union that was established by the great fathers of this country. And was it not some of our Republican congressmen who attempted to bind the wounds of the nation before the outbreak of the current hostilities? It is this party, the party of President Lincoln, that seeks an amiable end to the war and rebinding of the nation, but only after the treachery of secession has been properly destroyed and the rebel leaders placed in jail for their destructive ways and embracing the foul institution of slavery.

- News from Virginia-
- Battle near Brandy Station -

The cavalry battle which occurred on Tuesday at Beverly's Ford on the Rappahannock River, was the most desperately contested engagement of its kind that has taken place during the war.

Our Cavalry under General Pleasonton crossed the river in the early morning hours to attack the rebel camps. The enemy's cavalry commanded by the famed rebel Stuart responded. Over nine-thousand troops were involved in the battle that lasted throughout the day. The War Department in Washington reported that the rebels lost many in killed and wounded, and a number were taken as prisoner. The purpose of the raid near Brandy Station was to destroy the rebel camps if possible and discover troop strengths.

Our Army has been vigilant in keeping the rebel army south of the Rappahannock River in Virginia, along the line held there since last December.

-County News-

The rainy weather this month has been a boon for county farmers, but has caused problems in borough streets and county roads, many of which have been severely affected. Mr. J. Wortsmann avoided a tragedy last week when his mule and wagon loaded with leather goods from his tannery, slipped from the Baltimore Road into a ditch due to a portion of the road having been washed away. Mr. Wortsmann's wagon and some of the hides he bore upon it had severe damage, though he was fortunate that he and his mule escaped without injury. The county commissioners will meet soon about improving road conditions.

Dr. Michael Jacobs, professor at Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg, stated recently that the wet weather the county has been experiencing will last several more weeks, well into the summer months.

- STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL -

The Ladies of the German Reformed Church are making large preparations for a Strawberry Festival, in Sheads & Buehler's Hall, to commence next Thursday evening, and continue on Friday and Saturday evenings - the proceeds to pay for the excellent Melodeon now in use in the Church. Besides an abundance of Strawberries, there will be many other good things - a lunch, we hope every evening. All who go will have a pleasant time and get the worth of their money. Will not everybody be there?!

- Mishap in Franklin County -

Surveyor Henry Boardman was seriously injured last Saturday while performing survey work near Fayetteville. His horse threw Mr. Boardman into a ravine where he sustained injuries including a broken leg and lacerations on his head, after the animal was startled for an unknown reason. Many of our readers will remember Mr. Boardman who spent several weeks in the Gettysburg area surveying roads for the county commission. He is recuperating at the home of Mrs. Steinfelde near Ortanna.
