PRE-BROADCAST ACTIVITIES

Listed below are links to lesson plans and activities to use prior to the May 20th satellite broadcast and you still have time to prepare your class, even if the campaign has already begun. You will discover Essential Activities, such as the "Assignment of Soldier Identities" and "Civil War Vocabulary", and Additional Activities that will help your students get the most out of the broadcast, such as "Causes of the Civil War" and "Structure of the Armies". All of these activities can be easily adapted for your grade level and teaching style.

ESSENTIAL ACTIVITIES

· Soldier Biographical Sketches Assign one soldier to each student.

· Broadcast Notebook Each student will need a notebook that has 8 pages of activities.

· 1863: A Grim Year Weekly newspapers for students to follow one month prior to the broadcast.

· Civil War Vocabulary A list of Civil War terminology for teachers and students.

·Causes of the Civil War How the Civil War began.

·The Battle of Gettysburg An overview of the battlefield at Gettysburg.

·Drill of the Company An exercise to train the class to march like Civil War armies did.

·Pre-Broadcast Discussion Questions Questions for the class to discuss about Gettysburg and the Civil War.

·Structure of Civil War Armies The structure of an army in 1863.

·Civil War Slang What is a "flank"? Who was "Bobbie Lee"? Find out here!

·Civil War Lunches Your class can have a Civil War meal.

·Making Hardtack The staple of the table for any Civil War soldier.
