"Gettysburg: Stories of Monumental Courage"
A Broadcast For Students and Teachers from Gettysburg National Military Park
Broadcast date: May 21, 2002

Thank you for your interest in Gettysburg National Military Park’s Distance Education Program, and for our 2002 satellite broadcast to schools, "Gettysburg: Stories of Monumental Courage".

This year’s satellite broadcast explores different examples of courage exhibited by soldiers and civilians during the Battle of Gettysburg, as seen through the eyes of an enterprising reporter. Students will "experience" many of the hardships and witness the scenes that exemplify the spirit of the men who fought the battle and those women who cared for the wounded. By coordinating and preparing your students for this virtual field trip, they will be able to visualize the fields of Gettysburg as it may have appeared in 1863 and see how the park appears today, 139 years later, without leaving your classroom. Best of all, this program is free of charge!

You can prepare the students for their virtual field trip via the lessons and information on this website from Gettysburg National Military Park. We suggest that you follow the Pre-broadcast activities that will give you ideas on how to prepare your class. You should have your students visit the four battlefield scenes under Student's Broadcast Pages. Each scene will feature individuals and events that will be visited by the reporter, representing four types of courage displayed during the battle. Teachers can also download and copy these four pages as handouts prior to the broadcast.

This year’s broadcast is targeted toward 8th graders, but younger and older students can enjoy and learn from it as well. We know this broadcast can help you to meet your social studies and American history curriculum standards, as well as to incite an interest in American history and the Civil War beyond the pages of a textbook. Our specific learning objectives for the show are as follows-

After viewing the broadcast "Gettysburg: Stories of Monumental Courage," students will be able to:

· explain some of the causes and consequences of the American Civil War;

· identify key leaders and landscape features of the Battle of Gettysburg;

· reiterate at least one story of courage from the battle of Gettysburg and apply it to their lives.

The broadcast will air twice on Tuesday, May 21st at 10:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. to accommodate schools on both coasts. Check out the Get Hooked Up link to make sure your school is prepared to receive the satellite signal, and don’t forget to send in your Registration Form before the broadcast, and your Evaluation Form once your class has viewed the program.

Showing the broadcast on a later date by stations, schools and individuals is approved by the National Park Service as an educational teaching tool. The broadcast may not be packaged for sale by any individual or company without the express written consent of the National Park Service. The National Park Service is deeply indebted to the Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg for their financial support, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Emmitsburg, Maryland for their technical support, in helping to make this broadcast available to schools nation-wide.
