"Gettysburg: Stories of Monumental Courage"
A Broadcast For Students and Teachers from Gettysburg National Military Park
Broadcast date: May 21, 2002
We hope that this broadcast will spark the students' interest in the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg. In order to benefit more fully from our programs, we suggest several follow-up activities listed here. Their purpose is to reinforce concepts presented in the program, give students an opportunity to express feelings and impressions about the trip, and encourage further study and interest in the Civil War and our nation's past.
- Start a scrapbook on Gettysburg, with postcards, photos, or images taken from the internet or copied from books.
- Design a bulletin board comparing two Civil War personalities, north and south.
- Creative writing assignments: Write from the perspective of a soldier, farmer, wife, nurse, or commander. What was the role of the character during the war? How did the war affect him or her and how did they wind up at Gettysburg either in the battle or helping out afterward?
- Develop an art project on Civil War paintings or the monuments on the battlefield park.
- Draw a map of the battlefield and discuss strategy and tactics.
- Write an essay on the most memorable thing about the broadcast, or critique the broadcast (like a TV critic) and send a copy to the park.
- Write and present an officer's speech just before you are to lead your men into battle.
- Write an 1863 news story as though you are on the field just after the battle. Don't forget to interview survivors!
- Hold a debate in your class on whether or not General Lee should have ordered "Pickett's Charge" and who was ultimately responsible for its failure.
- Prepare questions about the broadcast for a "Trivia Game Show" lesson review.
- Discuss the importance of the National Park Service, research other parks, and plan a trip to one near you.
