"Gettysburg: The Face of Battle" A Distance Learning Program from Gettysburg National Military Park, Broadcast Live on May 9, 2001 |
On May 9, 2001, Gettysburg National Military Park and FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, broadcast "Gettysburg: The Face of Battle" live to classrooms all across the country via satellite. Featured in the one-hour broadcast were two groups of 8th Grade school students from E. F. Smith Middle School in York, Pennsylvania, who participated in a special program on "Pickett's Charge", the last Confederate gamble at Gettysburg. Students and teachers from all across the nation submitted questions or used the opportunity to call in their questions live during the show. Students from Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Texas and California submitted questions about the battle and personalities involved in the campaign. The May 9th show had the potential to reach out to over 500,000 students and teachers across the country, who enjoyed a virtual recreation of Pickett's Charge and learned about the motivation of the soldiers who fought in this great battle.
