"Gettysburg: The Face of Battle" A Distance Learning Program from Gettysburg National Military Park Broadcast Live on May 9, 2001 |
Thank you for your interest in Gettysburg National Military Park’s Distance Education Program, and for its 2001 satellite broadcast to schools, "Gettysburg: The Face of Battle".
This year’s program explores battle as experienced by the common soldier in the Civil War, his motivations for being a soldier, his physical and emotional experiences during the battle, and his perspective on its consequences once the battle was over. Your students will witness two groups of 8th graders as they explore the Gettysburg battlefields in the footsteps of the 57th Virginia Volunteer Infantry and the 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry regiments on July 3, 1863. The famous "Pickett’s Charge" will serve as a microcosm of the Civil War battle experience.
By coordinating and preparing your students for this virtual field trip, they will be able to visualize the fields of Gettysburg as they look today, as well as how they would have looked on that fateful day 138 years ago -- without leaving your classroom. You can prepare the students for their virtual field trip via the lessons and information on this website (Gettysburg Live- May 2001), covering the causes of the war, the organization of the armies, the Gettysburg campaign and battle, and vocabulary for Pickett’s Charge.
This year’s broadcast features and is targeted toward 8th graders, but younger and older students can enjoy and learn from it as well. We know this broadcast can help you to meet your social studies and American history curriculum standards, as well as to incite an interest in American history and the Civil War beyond the pages of a textbook. Our specific learning objectives for the show are as follows-/P>
