Education Programs and Opportunities within
Jamaica Bay Unit

Education plays a key role in helping to continue the preservation and conservation of our park systems. Young and old are encouraged to learn more about their local parks through different educational opportunities. Jamaica Bay Unit has a full roster of educational programs.

Ranger-led programs
Explore NYC's first Control Tower! Floyd Bennett Field, Ryan Visitor Center, Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Find out how this civil aviation landmark operated and enjoy panoramic views of Floyd Bennett Field and Jamaica Bay.

Teaching with Historic Places
Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) uses properties listed in the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places to enliven history, social studies, geography, civics, and other subjects. TwHP has created a variety of products and activities that help teachers bring historic places into the classroom. Destinations contained within Gateway National Recreation Area are included: Floyd Bennett Field in the Jamaica Bay Unit and Fort Hancock in the Sandy Hook Unit.

Exploring the Real Thing
Exploring the Real Thing (ERT) supports the National Park Service Northeast Region's strategic plan by providing teachers with information on curriculum-based programs and materials offered by national parks in New York and New Jersey. Explore real places and real resources on field trips to the Jamaica Bay Unit and benefit from education programs supporting New York and New Jersey state curriculum.
