Albert Gallatin believed in the value of education. When he felt there were not adequate educational opportunities available in New York City, he helped establish the New York University. The National Park Service also believes in the value of education. Through our Parks as Classrooms programs we strive to help teachers bring learning to life for their students.
The staff at Friendship Hill NHS has developed teaching aids for classroom teachers and home schoolers. These packages include pre-visit and post-visit activities designed to help children get the most out of visiting this National Park. These packages were prepared in cooperation with area educational professionals and are designed to meet the curriculum requirements for Pennsylvania.
None of material in the teacher's packages is copyrighted. Teachers are encouraged to reproduce the necessary sheets for students.

Activity:
Students act as a jury of their peers as the class re-creates the infamous 1795
Whiskey Rebellion Trial held in Philadelphia. In a mock trial, some students
portray farmers arrested for failure to pay the "Whiskey Tax". The
Park Ranger portrays the prosecution and presents evidence while the defendants
defend their actions to the jury which will decide their fate.
Activity: Teams of students participate in a board game representing one fiscal year during Gallatin's term as Secretary of the Treasury. Teams are given $15 million dollars and must navigate the board, avoiding over spending, growing debt and possible bankruptcy of the nation. The team with the most money to be put toward the debt at the end of the game wins.
Activity: Each Student is given a journal book as the class takes a hike with a Corps of Discovery Scout(aka - Park Ranger). Along the trail, the students record and draw their observations of nature that will be sent to President Jefferson and Secretary of the Treasury Gallatin. The class will discuss their notes at the end of the hike.
Note: This program requires the class to spend time outdoors. Proper clothing and shoes are required. Severe or dangerous weather will cause the cancellation of the program.
Activity: A wooden crate, left forgotten, was discovered in the attic of the old stone house. Inside were found items belonging to a one time resident of Friendship Hill, Albert Gallatin. We invite you class to explore these treasured items of a bygone period. Students become historians as they attempt to discover what the objects are and what they tell us about Gallatin and his family.
Activity: Students will get a tour of the Acid Mine Drainage Facility and an explanation of how the facility treats the severely polluted Acid Mine Drainage water. Then students will get a hands-on experience testing water samples for iron and pH. The water will be tested at 4 locations throughout the treatment process to see how the levels change and how the water quality improves.
Macroinvertebrate
Stream Study - Jr. and Sr. HighActivity: Aquatic macroinvertebrates (small insects and other organisms that can the seen with the eye) are excellent indicators of overall water quality. Students will get to look at the macroinvertebrates found in Dublin Run. Some of these animals are only found in very clean water, some are found in mildly polluted water, and a very few can live in severely polluted water. By sampling the organisms the students will determine the overall water quality of the stream.
Activity: Students use map and compass to negotiate a course through the park. Two courses are available. On the short course, students remain on the knoll within view of the Gallatin house. The advanced course takes students 1.5 miles hrough the woods and meadows of Friendship Hill. This program is teacher instructed. Requirements and Reservations
