A Tour of Fort Union - NPS WebRanger Site

Just for Kids!

(Of all ages)

Fort Union Trading Post is a great place to have fun learning about a very special time in the history of our country - the time of the fur trade!

You enter the fort through the huge wooden gates.

Your first stop is the trade house. In the summer, you will find a trader here. He will tell you how the traders held meetings and did business with the Indians and may even show you how the traders and Indians communicated in sign language.

On summer Saturdays, our blacksmith works in the open blacksmith shop, telling you more interesting stories of the trading post while he makes useful things out of iron.

Inside the Bourgeois House (say Boor-shwa) you can visit our museum and see relics found by archeologists right here at the fort. There is a table full of furs you can touch, and a bookstore where you can find fascinating books about the fort, trappers and mountain men, and Native American Indians.

We're looking forward to your visit. See you soon!
