What the Volunteers Do
The Volunteer-In-Parks (VIP) program at Fort Stanwix National Monument offers people a wide variety of ways to enjoy themselves while helping to preserve and interpret the park. Much of what the park offers to the public is made possible by the corps of dedicated volunteers who are willing to share their free time with the site.
Volunteering at Fort Stanwix offers something for everyone. Volunteer training takes place from January through March and September through November every year. There is no minimum time requirement to be a volunteer. Come see what Fort Stanwix National Monument has to offer!
Living History Program
The most popular area of volunteer participation is in the park's living history program. Men, women and children are offered the chance to step back in time to the period of the American Revolution. Volunteers can take on the role of a soldier, civilian or family member at the fort to help interpret the life of the people over 200 years ago to the visiting public. Volunteers can take part in drill and weapons demonstrations, craftsmen's work, music demonstrations, and family life programs.

Visitor Services
Volunteer opportunities however, go far beyond just the living history program. Some folks enjoy working in the park's visitor orientation center, preparing visitors for their trip "back in time" to the fort itself. Work in the visitor center can also include helping in the upkeep of the park's library and historical files.

Administrative Support
For those that prefer to help out in a more "behind the scenes" capacity, volunteer opportunities are present in the park's administrative division. Volunteers can help out with various clerical duties, prepare mailings, and develop press releases to name just a few things.

Maintenance
A great deal of work goes into the upkeep of the reconstructed fort and the park's maintenance division always welcomes the help of volunteers that are interested in helping to maintain the fort structure and the grounds around it. Volunteers might find themselves caulking the fort's walls and rooms, doing grounds work, or helping to paint or repair cannons.
Encampments
A different type of volunteer help us garrison the fort. We look forward to working with encampment volunteers as well.
