Fourth Grade Education Packet

Introduction

Dear Teacher,

Thank you for your interest in Fort Stanwix National Monument's Fourth (4th) Grade Educational programs. Enclosed in this binder are lesson plans for the programs that we offer. These include the Soldier's Day Program entitled, "Defending the Oneida Carry - A Soldier's Life in Revolutionary New York", and a Ranger guided Exploration Program entitled, "The Oneida Carry and Fort Stanwix - A Crossroad to Change". Also included are instructions for completing the Exploration Program without a Ranger (self-guided).

Each of these programs starts in your classroom. In your packet you will find pre-visit lesson plans, some of which must be completed before you visit the park. The pre-visit lesson plans are designed to help you prepare the students for their visit to Fort Stanwix. You will also find a history section, an activity book, and a bibliography for you to refer to and use.

Please make a reservation well in advance of your visit to Fort Stanwix. Reservations are made on a first come first serve basis. This will ensure that a Ranger is available for your program. An intense schedule of activities has been planned for your visit. The activities your students will be participating in are outlined in this package. All of the park's educational programs are offered Monday's through Friday's, except on national holidays and January 1 through March 31, during the school year. The Soldier's Day Program is only provided from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., and the Exploration Program with a Park Ranger is offered to one group in the morning and one group in the afternoon. If you are not able to schedule a Ranger led program because the date and time you can come are booked, you may still conduct the self guiding Exploration Program at the park. Please tell us at the time you make your reservation if there are any special arrangements that we need to make for your group. Before the day arrives for your visit to Fort Stanwix, please stress the importance to your students to dress properly for the weather. Programs are given rain, snow, mud or shine. There is a bookstore at Fort Stanwix operated by our cooperating association Eastern National with books and materials that will enhance your classroom activities. The Store is also available to your group on the day of your visit after you have completed your program.

All of the educational programs conclude back in your classroom with post-visit activities. These activities bring closure to the mini-unit you are completing and provide your students the chance to reflect upon what they have learned.

If you have any questions or experiences you would like to share about this program, please give us a call at (315) 336-2090.

Acknowledgements:

National Park Service Rangers, Fourth Grade Teachers, and a representative of the Oneida Nation have developed these lesson plans using New York State's education guidelines. The original packet was printed with a grant from the National Park Service's "Parks as Classrooms" program. Since then, the Northern Frontier project has sponsored a second printing with contributions from Utica National Insurance Group and Romanelli Advertising of Clinton, New York.

Fort Stanwix National Monument has made this updated version available on the internet at http://www.nps.gov/fost.

We appreciate the many long hours provided by those involved to make these lesson plans a reality.

Visitation Rules

These rules are to make sure your visit with us is as fun and safe as possible.

  1. Please do not run in the fort because it is easy to fall and get hurt.
  2. Please do not sit or climb on the cannons. They are periodically fired, and we need your help to keep them in good shape.
  3. Splinters aren't good souvenirs to take home with you. Please avoid rubbing your hands on the wooden barracks.
  4. If you get separated from your group, please go to the barracks marked Gregg, the park ranger there will help you.
  5. When there is a rope or gate blocking your path, please do not go past it. They are put in certain places to keep visitors safe.
  6. Please do not bring gum or candy into the fort.
  7. Have a great time during your visit!
