Conflict on the BorderPresentation on Civil War Medicine

  • Manifest Destiny: The 1840s was a time period of rapid territorial acquisition and expansion for the United States. Soldiers from Fort Scott participated in several events which brought about this development. Students at this station will probe the issues of westward expansion and Manifest Destiny in the 1840s by participating in a play that highlights Fort Scott's role in the opening of the West..<---
  • Bleeding Kansas: The town of Fort Scott was a proslavery center during this period but there were several "Free Soilers" in the surrounding area. Divided loyalties led to incidents of violence on the former parade ground of the fort. At this station, students will explore this time period of the site's history by becoming characters in a drama about this volatile time period. <---
  • Civil War: During the Civil War, the town of Fort Scott became a hub of Union activity. It served as a supply base and training ground for Union troops operating in the area. At this station, students will learn more about the role that Fort Scott played during the Civil War.<---

Guided Tours
  • Groups not wishing to participate in one of the above programs may request a guided tour of the fort.
  • Guided tours should be reserved three weeks in advance. For reservations, call
    (620) 223-0310.
  • Groups of larger than 50 may be divided.
  • Allow one hour for the guided tour.
  • Guided tours are available any time of year except during special events and spring education programs .
