In
1842, Fort Scott was established on an upland
prairie spur overlooking the Marmaton River. A
soldier described the landscape as , "a beautifully
undulating prairie." Due to settlement, the prairie
surrounding the Fort gradually decreased until only
remnants of the vast tallgrass prairie remained.
With the efforts of the National Park Service, over
five acres of tallgrass prairie is being restored
at the Fort Scott National Historic
Site.
Walk our virtual
trail and imagine "the most magnificent prairie of
the country," as the land around Fort Scott was
described in 1843.
