The
parade ground is the heart of Fort Scott. The grass
square, originally the fort parade ground and later
the town plaza, witnessed the events that define
Fort Scott. The parade ground is 350 feet long and
350 feet wide. The points of the square are
oriented due north, south, east, and west. Its axis
runs in a northeast-southwest direction because of
the topography of the bluff. The powder magazine,
flagpole, and well canopy are located in the center
of the parade grounds, with structures erected on
all four sides.

Military
ceremonial functions were held on the
parade ground, i.e., reviews, dress
parades, band concerts, changing of the
guards, posting the colors for reveille
and retreat. When the military left, the
parade ground became the city park,
Carroll Plaza. Plaza activities ranged
from formal to informal. The Plaza also
saw its share of violence during "Bleeding
Kansas" and Civil War years.
