MagazineThe powder magazine is an octagon brick building with a tin roof. Prepared ammunition (including buck and ball and cartridges), black powder, port fires, and friction primers used in ignition of artillery were stored in this building. The structure contained copper nails on the interior to prevent sparks. Those who entered were instructed to take off their shoes or put socks over their shoes and leave their swords outside. Canes with metal tips were not allowed due to the potential for sparks.

Magazine Interior

All ammunition was accounted for at all times and any soldier who misplaced any of the ammo would have the amount deducted from his pay.

The ceiling of the magazine inside is an intricate pattern of brick supporting the tin roof.

Magazine Window

The large windows on the sides of the magazine were opened 3 days per week to air the room out and keep the powder dry.
