Flag Pole

Quartermaster Thomas Swords planned to place the flag staff in the center of the parade ground. As late as 1848, the pole had not been erected because no suitable timbers were located in the immediate vicinity of the fort. The flag staff was completed sometime between 1848 and1853.

The exisiting flag staff is reconstructed and is 65 feet tall. John Herford purchased the original flag staff for one dollar, along with the lightning rod and staff, at public auction on April 16, 1855.

A bandstand occupied the site of the flag staff from approximately 1885 to 1945.
