HISTORY
OF OFFICERS' QUARTERS NO.
2
Construction
began on Officers' Quarters No. 2 in 1845
and was completed in 1848. This building
was essentially the same in material and
architecture as Officers' Quarters No. 1.
Officers'
Quarters No. 2 was occupied by the
military until the1853 abandonment of the
post. It sold at the public auction for
$300.00 dollars in 1855 and was purchased
by Hiero T. Wilson, former post "sutler."
Wilson occupied one-half of the duplex and
Samuel Williams occupied the other half of
the duplex. During the Civil War, Mr.
Wilson continued to occupy the Wilson half
and Union officers on the Williams half.
Wilson offered the building for sale in
1873, but may have continued to live in
the structure until his death in 1892. At
that time Charles Goodlander(husband of
Elizabeth Wilson: daughter of Hiero
Wilson, the former post sutler) purchased
the property. In 1901, one-half of the
structure was deeded by Goodlander as the
Goodlander Home for the Children. The Home
purchased the other half of the structure
and maintained the institution in that
structure until 1958. At that time, the
ground floor was leased by the Women's
Business and Professional Association as a
meeting room. The upper floors were
unoccupied. The building was donated by
the city to the National Park Service in
1978.
