Design a Frontier Fort

Social Studies: Kansas History Standard - Uses a working knowledge and understanding of significant developments in the history of Kansas and produce a visual representation of a product. (4th through 8th grade)


Performance Task

FIRST - Prior Knowledge - The student will pencil sketch a picture of a Frontier Military Fort.

SECOND - After viewing several Kansas Frontier Forts the student will compare/contrast Fort Scott and another Kansas Frontier Fort either by fort design or fort purpose using a Venn diagram. (For example: Size or acres of fort, numbers of buildings, services available, design layout and/or style of architecture at fort, location of fort, materials used to build fort, geographic similarities, and type of troop or soldier posted at fort)


Knowledge Skills

  • Create a pencil drawing of a frontier fort based on student's prior knowledge
  • Read or view resources for specific information
  • Create Venn diagram comparing/contrasting Fort Scott with one other Kansas Frontier Fort
  • Modify original drawing to create an ideal Kansas Frontier Fort
  • Justify modifications and fort design either through written or oral presentation based on the Venn diagram
