Bread Baking
Activity suggested by Tom Compton, Anne Elrod, Marcia Gard, Karl Hamm, Mary Warrick and Michelle Zimmerman.

Math - Computation and Estimation: Compute with whole numbers and fractions. Understand and use whole numbers and fractions. (4th through 8th grade)


Performance Task

Use the bakery page from the Ft. Scott Web Site to view the recipe for bread. Have the students use math skills to reduce the recipe to feed the number of students in their classroom or the number of people in their family. Students can take reduced recipe and actually bake bread at home or help bake bread in the school cafeteria.


Knowledge Skills

  • Be able to use the Internet to gain access to the web site http://www.nps.gov/fosc
  • Use appropriate computer etiquette
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions
  • Understand systems of measurement
  • Apply various strategies to solve multistep problems.

The student correctly computes the recipe in order to have enough bread for their class or for the number of people in their family.

Computations are accurate with possible errors in reducing, spelling, and/or appropriate form for baking.

Computations are not accurate. Answer reflect limited understanding of fractional concepts.
