The student describes life at a frontier military fort in Kansas.

Performance Task

The teacher will divide the class into cooperative groups and give each group one medical condition to research. (Cholera, dysentery, pneumonia, consumption or tuberculosis, variola or smallpox, scurvy, and delirious tremens or alcoholism were most prevalent. Ague fever or malaria, frostbite, and typhoid fever were also common.) The research will include the symptoms, the diagnosis, the cure, and the consequences of the disease on Fort life. Each group will organize its research in a graphic organizer. The groups will role play their diseases to the class, using these characters: surgeon, patient, hospital steward, and chart recorder. The class will prepare one large chart of all diseases researched.

NOTE: the students will probably know as much or more than the doctors of the time. Remind them to use early 1800's medical terms.
