Guidon for 1st Dragoons, Company A

What were Dragoons? They were U.S. soldiers trained to fight on horseback and on foot. They were in existence from 1833 to 1861. In 1861, both regiments of dragoons were redesignated as the First and Second U.S. Cavalry.
