Building
and site construction is progressing. The asphalt base course has been
put down on the parking lot and project access roads. A retention pond
located in the middle of the parking lot has been shaped and will soon
be completed. Building masonry work, including block and split-faced
CMUs (concrete masonry units) has been completed. The framing and decking
is installed for the second floor. Roof rafters and trussing are currently
being set as well as the structural insulated roof panels. Partition
wall framing, rough-in of electrical and plumbing systems is ongoing.
The air-handling units for the HVAC system are on site and will soon
be set in the mechanical mezzanine.
A exhibit fabrication contractor, Design and Production Inc., of Lorton,
Virginia, was selected to construct and install the interpretive and
education center exhibits. Park staff have met with D&P has and
the pre-production fabrication work is under way. Progress on related
interpretive center media includes the selection of Northern Light Inc.,
of Boston, MA., as the orientation film production company. The film
treatment 1st draft is presently under review.
Target grand opening for the new center continues to be July of '05.
October 2004
The
building slab, masonry walls and structural steel have been erected
and utilities are roughed into the building. Roads, including the trail
leading to the fort, and the parking lot have been cut to sub-grade.
During the upcomming months, crews will work to install wood trusses,
structural roof panels and steel raised-seam roofing. Windows and doors
will be put in to close up the building shell, and the electrical, plumbing
and mechanical systems will be installed. Crews will begin interior
finishes and put down asphalt pavement on the roads and parking lot.
March 30, 2004
The contractor is on site preparing to resume work on April 5, 2004
after a three month winter shutdown.
November 21, 2003
The new access road to the park headquarters and maintenance complex
opens today. The existing lower section of the HQ road will be permanently
closed to all but construction traffic. All traffic to park headquarters
will now use the new section of road. Work can now begin on the building
that will rest, in part, over the lower section of the old road bed.
Work will also continue to complete bank shaping, road shoulders and
drainage ditches along the new section of road.
October 21, 2003
Workers continued to clear and grub the area for building footprint,
parking area, and access road. Most of the topsoil has been removed
in the picnic road area. Stumps and organic matter have been hauled
away.
October 1, 2003
GRUNLEY-WALSH and MCDS are on site making Room for the new 14,000 sq.
foot visitor's center. The clearing of trees and shrubs has begun. The
bright orange safety fence has gone up to set the limit of work boundaries.
As of September 30, 2003 a surveyor is on site to stake out the footprints
of the new roads and the building. Silt fences and other erosion and
sedimentation controls are being installed across the work site. Excavation
for new road and installation of the electrical service will soon begin.
Weekly meetings will be held to discuss progress, identify problems,
consider solutions and update work schedules.

The consulting and contracting firm, MCDS Inc., a premier provider
of management, construction, and design services based in Denver, Colorado
is collaborating with Grunley-Walsh Construction for this project. The
Rockville, MD firm, Grunley-Walsh, is a high-profile nationally recognized
general contractor specializing in museum, memorial, government and
restoration projects

The deadline for submission of proposals has passed. All proposals
have been evaluated. The National Park Service in conducting in-depth
evaluations and negotiations of submissions that provide the best value
within a competitive range. It is our goal to have the contract in place
by the end of May and begin site preparation in early summer.

electronically on the Department of Interior's National Business Center
