Myths about George Washington's Youth  

Introduction:

There are many myths about George Washington's youth. This activity will help the student sort out some of the myths and learn what we do know about Washington's youth.

Materials:

Library books, Internet or articles about George Washington's youth
Student Reading - "Myths about George Washington' Youth"

Procedure:

  1. Ask the student what they know about George Washington's youth.
  2. Make a list on the board.
  3. Ask them if they think all these "facts" are true. Note on the board which ones the students identified as questionable.
  4. Next have the students do research on George Washington's youth. Use library books, the Internet or other articles.
  5. Have the students report on what they found. What new information did they find? Did they find out anything about the questionable "facts"? Do the students think any of them can be listed as myths? Discuss with your students what myths are.
  6. Now have the students read the student reading on myths about George Washington's youth.
