2006 Rules and Guidelines

  1. All entries become the property of Fort Necessity National Battlefield.
  2. All entries must show an event in the life of George Washington. Winners will be selected on the basis of originality, artistic merit, and relevance to the historic themes "The Life of Washington" or "Washington In Fayette". "The Life Of Washington" theme encompasses any depiction of an event in his life, either personal, military, or political. The "Washington In Fayette" theme will cover any depiction of his activities in Fayette County, i.e. Fort Necessity, Jumonville Glen, with General Braddock, his land speculation trips, his grist mill in Perryopolis, etc. In the past, fewer entries have been submitted in this category giving entrants a better chance to win.
  3. The objective of the contest is to encourage students to learn more historically correct facts about George Washington. Therefore, pictures that depict incorrect historic facts (chopping down the cherry tree, throwing the coin across the river, wooden teeth) are not considered for prizes. Please encourage your students to research before choosing a subject. The judges will be looking for originality and historic accuracy, indicators the students did some research.
  4. Students are limited to one entry. Please specify the category in which you wish to compete on the entry form.
  5. Paper size no larger than 9" x 12". Anything larger will be disqualified.
  6. Any medium may be used (pen and ink, crayon, paint, etc.). No tracing. Traced entries will be disqualified.
  7. Deadline for entries: Entries must be postmarked by Monday, February 6, 2006 or hand-delivered to Fort Necessity by close-of-business (5:00) Wednesday, February 8, 2006.
  8. Students are encouraged to print their titles on the front of their pictures. However, they should NOT write their names anywhere on the front of the picture, that would mean disqualification.
  9. Each picture must be accompanied by a completed entry form or sheet of paper with the student's name, address, phone, school, and category they are entering. Please tape entry form to the back of each entry.
  10. Judging will be done Saturday, February 11, 2006. The decision of the judges is final.
  11. Winners will be notified by Wednesday, February 15, 2006.
  12. Prizes will be awarded at an Awards Ceremony Saturday, February 25, 2006 at the Fort Necessity National Battlefield Visitor Center at 1:00 PM.
  13. Winners need not be present at the Awards Ceremony to win.
  14. All winning pictures will be displayed in the Visitor Center from Friday, February 24 through Friday, March 3, 2006. Winning entries will be posted on the park's website, (www.nps.gov/fone/art/) along with the artists name and school.
