National Park Service
Fort Necessity National Battlefield - Where three worlds collide

Criteria for Camp in Meadow

Re-enactors will be considered for permission to camp by the fort area if they adhere to the following rules -

  1. Space is limited to the first 50 individuals that apply in person to the camp commander on Friday, July 2 and pass inspection. Jim Mullins of the Virginia Regiment will be serving as the camp commander. Questions should be directed to him on how he will be judging. He recommends visiting the following web site for information - www.angelfire.com/va3/virginiaregiment/1754kit.html. His daytime phone number is 804-649-7551; email address is virginiaregiment@hotmail.com.

  2. The area adjacent to the fort will be used for an interpretive camp area to educate the public on the life and times of the British soldier on campaign in 1754. Potential visitation to fort area could be as high as 2,000 or more visitors per day. Participants will interact with the public demonstrating soldier life and performing camp duties, i.e. posting guards, etc.

  3. All participants will represent one of two impressions to camp in the Meadow; 1) Virginia Regiment circa 1754 or 2) South Carolina Independent Company during Fort Necessity Campaign.

  4. The camp will reflect campaign style and as such there will be a minimal of camp equipment . This will be a hardcore camp! Participants will share in use of tents (three to four persons per tent) in tents provided by the park site and/or those permitted to bring one in as per the camp commander's decision. Participants are not required to use a tent. Camp kitchens will also reflect a minimal of equipment and use of one or two fire pits. Leave the cast iron at home.

  5. Participants will be judged to see if they meet the camp rules. Personal appearance together with clothing, kit and equipment will all be evaluated. Facial hair, modern eye ware, coolers, sleeping bags etc. incorrect to the time are examples of items that will disqualify the participant. Those disqualified will be asked to return to the main camp area at the picnic grounds.

  6. This camp is reserved for soldiers only; historic documents do not list any female camp followers in the meadow during the campaign and as such will not be permitted in camp.

  7. Participants must be willing to tear down camp (tents) once each day (July 3 & 4) for tactical demonstration. This is being done for safety reasons.

  8. This is an interpretive camp only. No Blanket Selling is permitted!!!
