Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

WADE, JAMES FRANKLIN: Born in Ohio in 1842, he was appointed a first lieutenant in the 3rd Cavalry in May 1861, transferring to the 6th Cavalry in August 1861. He mustered out in April 1866 as the colonel of the 6th U.S. Colored Cavalry. Appointed a captain in the 6th Cavalry in May 1866, he was promoted to major in the 9th Cavalry two months later. He served at Fort Davis from November 1867 to November 1868 with that regiment. He transferred to the 10th Cavalry, as its lieutenant colonel, in March 1879, and to the 5th Cavalry, as its colonel, in 1887. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1897 and to major general in 1903. He retired for age in April 1907 and died in August 1921 at Jefferson, Ohio.

WARD, CHARLES RICHARD: Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1871. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1876 and served with Troop D of the 10th at Fort Davis from January 1883 to August 1884. He was dismissed from the army in January 1888 and died in New York City in 1901.

WARD, HENRY CLAY: Born in Massachusetts, he enlisted as a private in the 15th Massachusetts Infantry in July 1861. He mustered out in April 1863 as the sergeant major to accept an appointment as a second lieutenant in that regiment. He was appointed a second lieutenant and a first lieutenant in the 11th Infantry in February 1866, transferring to the 16th Infantry in April 1869.  He was promoted to captain in 1880 and served at Fort Davis from January-April 1881 commanding Company E of that regiment. He was promoted to major in 1898, transferring to the 12th Infantry in 1900. In1902 he was promoted to colonel of the 15th Infantry.

WASHINGTON, READE MACON: Born in Pennsylvania, he attended the U.S. Military Academy from 1865-1867, but did not graduate. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in June 1869 and served at Fort Davis from July 1870 to May 1871 with Troop B of that regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1874 and was dismissed from the army in February 1876.

WEAVER, FRANCIS HEYER: Born in Pennsylvania, he enlisted as a private in the 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry in October 1861, mustering out in October 1864. He served as a private in the 44th Infantry from August to November 1868. He was appointed chaplain of the 10th Cavalry in 1880 and served at Fort Davis with the regiment from August 1882 to April 1885, in the rank of captain. He retired in August 1897.

WEEKS, HARRISON SAMUEL: Born in Michigan, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1868. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1871 and to captain in 1885. He served at Fort Davis from October 1887 to May 1888 as the captain of Troop F of that regiment. He retired for disability in September 1889 and died in January 1892 at Allegan, Michigan.

WEISEL, DANIEL: Born in Maryland, he was appointed an assistant surgeon in October 1867 and served at Fort Davis from December 1868 to May 1872 as the post surgeon. He died in October 1888.

WELLS, ALMOND BROWN: Born in New York in 1842, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the Nevada Cavalry in July 1863, mustering out as a captain in November 1865. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 8th Cavalry in July 1866 and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1867. In 1870, he was promoted to captain and served at Fort Davis from November 1887 to May 1888 in command of Troop A of that regiment. He was promoted to major in the 4th Cavalry on July 1, 1891, transferring to the 8th Cavalry one week later. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 9th Cavalry in 1899 and to colonel of the 1st Cavalry in 1901. He retired as a brigadier general in August 1903 and died in September 1912 at Geneva, New York.

WESSELLS, HENRY WALTON JR.: Born in New York, in 1846, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1862-1864, but did not graduate. He enlisted in the 7th Infantry in March 1865, mustering out in August 1865 to accept an appointment as a first lieutenant in that regiment. He transferred to the 3rd Cavalry in December 1870, and was promoted to captain in 1872. He served at Fort Davis from May-October 1885 in command of Troop H of the 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to major in 1892 and to lieutenant colonel of the regiment in 1899.  He was promoted to colonel of cavalry on February 2, 1901 and retired on February 19, 1901. He died in November 1929 in Washington.

WEVER, BENJAMIN SAMUEL: Born in New York in 1858, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1880. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 1st Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from December 1881 to July 1882 with Company D of that regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1887 and was dropped for desertion in 1891. He later reentered the army and died in August 1916 in New York.

WHITALL, SAMUEL RUCKER: Born in Michigan, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy from September 1861 to July 1862, but did not graduate. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 2nd New York Artillery in May 1864. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 11th Infantry in March 1867, he transferred to the 16th Infantry in April 1869. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and served at Fort Davis from January-April 1881 with Company E of that regiment. He was promoted to captain in 1887 and to major in 1899.  In 1901, he was promoted to lieutenant of the 27th Infantry.

WILCOX, JOHN ANDREW: Born in Washington, D.C., he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Cavalry in March 1861, and a first lieutenant in May 1861. He transferred to the 4th Cavalry in August 1861, and was promoted to captain in 1863 and to major in the 8th Cavalry in 1879. He served at Fort Davis from March-May 1888 with that regiment. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 1st Cavalry in 1891, transferring to the 3rd Cavalry in May 1892. He retired in October of that year.

WILHELMI, LOUIS: Born in Prussia, he attended the U.S. Military Academy from July 1872 to December 1873, but did not graduate. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry in October 1875 and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1880. He served at Fort Davis from March 1881 to July 1882 as the regimental and post adjutant. He died on active duty at Mobile, Alabama, in April 1886.

WILLIAMS, CHARLES WILSON: Born in Kentucky, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1875. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 18th Infantry. Promoted to captain and assistant quartermaster in June 1879, he served at Fort Davis from April-October 1883 in that capacity. He was promoted to major in the Quartermaster Department in 1893, to lieutenant colonel in the Quartermaster Department in February 1898, and to colonel in the Quartermaster Department in July 1898. He died on active duty in November 1898.

WILLIAMS, RICHARD ALGERNON: Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1870. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1876 and to captain in 1886. He served at Fort Davis from March-May 1888 in command of Troop C in that regiment. He died in January 1890.

WILLIAMS, WILLIAM MORROW: Born in Ohio, he enlisted as a private in the 45th Ohio Infantry in July 1862. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the same regiment in June 1863, mustering out in June 1865 as a captain. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 28th Infantry in November 1867, he transferred to the 19th Infantry in March 1869. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1878 and served at Fort Davis from May-July 1888 with Company F of that regiment. He retired with the rank of captain in August 1896.

WILSON, CHARLES IRVING: Born in Washington, D.C., he entered the army as an assistant surgeon in May 1861. He was appointed a captain in the 16th Infantry in 1867. He was honorably discharged at his own request in 1870, but was appointed a major and paymaster in 1875. He served at Fort Davis from August-September 1879 in that capacity. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1898 and to colonel and assistant paymaster in 1899. He retired in 1901.

WILSON, DAVID BOAL: Born in Pennsylvania, he was appointed a first lieutenant in the 131st Pennsylvania Infantry in August 1862, mustering out in September 1865 as a first lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Veteran Volunteers. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 40th Infantry in July 1866, he transferred to the 25th Infantry in April 1869. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1871 and served at Fort Davis from June 1875 to May 1880 with Company I and as regimental adjutant. He was promoted to captain in 1886, to major in 1899, and to lieutenant colonel in 1901. He retired as a Major in March 1902.

WILSON, JAMES EDWARD: Born in Ireland, he enlisted as a private in an Engineer Battalion in August 1873, mustering out in April 1882 as a corporal in the general services to accept an appointed as a second lieutenant in the 5th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from July-December 1889 with Company K of that regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1890 in the 11th Infantry. He transferred back to the 5th Infantry in 1891 and resigned in January 1896. He died in April 1896.

WOOD, EDWARD EDGAR: Born in Pennsylvania, he enlisted as the commissary sergeant of the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry in September 1862. He mustered out in July 1864 to accept an appointment as a first lieutenant in the same regiment and was mustered out in August 1865. He entered the U.S. Military Academy in 1866. He graduated in 1870 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant 1873 and to captain in 1886. He served at Fort Davis from November 1887 to May 1888 with the 8th Cavalry in command of Troop H. He was appointed a professor at West Point in 1892 and in October 1902 was still instructing at the Academy having attainted the rank of colonel.

WOODBURY, THOMAS CHILDS: Born in Kentucky, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1872. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the16th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1880 and served at Fort Davis from May 1882 to February 1885 with Company K. He was promoted to captain in 1890 and to major in the 19th Infantry in 1899. He became the lieutenant colonel of the 29th Infantry in July 1902.  He transferred to the 17th Infantry in August of that year.  He transferred to the 7th Infantry in 1903.

WOODRUFF, EZRA: Born in Kentucky, he enlisted as a hospital steward in the 15th Kentucky Infantry in December 1861. He was appointed an assistant surgeon in the same regiment in March 1863, mustering out in November 1863. He reentered the army in November 1868 as an assistant surgeon and served at Fort Davis from June 1877 to May 1879 as post surgeon with the rank of captain. He was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of  major, in 1889, and to lieutenant colonel and the Deputy Surgeon General in February 1901. He retired in October 1901.

WOODWARD, SAMUEL LIPPINCOTT: Born in New Jersey in 1840, he enlisted in the 6th Illinois Cavalry in February 1862, mustering out in September 1865 as a major.  He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 10th Cavalry in June 1867. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1867 and served at Fort Davis from November 1879 to April 1885  first with Troop K and then as the regiment’s adjutant.  He was promoted to captain in 1887 and to major in the 1st Cavalry in 1900. He became the lieutenant colonel of the 7th Cavalry in 1903 and was promoted to colonel of cavalry on July 8, 1904. He retired the next day, but was advanced to brigadier general, retired, in December 1904. He died in April 1924 at St Louis, Missouri.

WYETH, MARLBOROUGH CHURCHILL: Born in Rhode Island, he was appointed an assistant surgeon in 1881 and served at Fort Davis from July-August 1890 as post surgeon  with the rank  captain.  In 1899, he was promoted to major and surgeon in 1899.

WYGANT, HENRY: Born in New York, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1872. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 24th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1878 and served at Fort Davis from June-October 1880 with Company A of that regiment. He was promoted to captain in 1888, to major in 1899, and to lieutenant colonel of the 6th Infantry in 1901.
