Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

VALOIS, GUSTAVUS: Born in Prussia, he enlisted as a sergeant in the 3rd Maryland Infantry in April 1862. He mustered out in April 1864 to accept an appointment as a first lieutenant in the same regiment. He was mustered out in May 1865 and enlisted that December and was assigned to the 5th Infantry. In July 1868, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry and served at Fort Davis from October 1868 to June 1871 with Troop C of that regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1872 and to captain in 1884. He retired in February 1887 and died in December 1891. His real name was Gustavus Haenel.

VAN HORN, JAMES JUDSON: Born in Ohio in 1835, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1858. He was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the 1stInfantry. He transferred to the 8th Infantry and served at Fort Davis from September 1859 to April 1861 with Company G. He was promoted to first lieutenant in May 1861, and to captain in 1862. He was promoted to major, transferring to the 13th Infantry in 1879, to lieutenant colonel of the 25th Infantry in 1885, and to colonel of the 8th Infantry in 1891. He died on active duty in August 1898 at Fort D.A. Russell, Wyoming.

VAN VALZAH, DAVID DOUGALL: Born in Illinois, he was appointed a first lieutenant in the 12th Infantry in May 1861. He was promoted to captain in 1864 and transferred to the 30th Infantry in 1866. Assigned to the 25th Infantry in December 1870, he served at Fort Davis from November 1872 to July 1876 in command of Company D of that regiment. He was promoted to major of the 20th Infantry in 1886, to lieutenant colonel of the 24th Infantry in 1891, and to colonel of the 18th Infantry in 1896. He retired in June 1899.

VAN VLIET, FREDERICK: Born in New York in 1841, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 3rd Cavalry in August 1861. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1862 and to captain in 1866. He was promoted to major, transferring to the 10th Cavalry, in June 1882. He served at Fort Davis from August 1882 to April 1885. He died in March 1891 at Hooker’s Ranch, Arizona Territory, of injuries he received when he fell from a wagon.

VIELE, CHARLES DELAVAN: Born in New York in 1841, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry in October 1861. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1862 and to captain in 1866. He was assigned to the 10th Cavalry in December 1870 and served at Fort Davis from August 1878 to April 1885 in command of Company C of that regiment. He was promoted to major in the 1st Cavalry in 1889, to lieutenant colonel in 1897, and to colonel of the 4th Cavalry in 1899. He was retired for disability in January 1900. He died in October 1916 at Los Angeles, California.

VOGDES, CHARLES BERARD: Born in Florida in 1856, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1880. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 1st Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from April 1881 to July 1882 with Company E of that regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1889 and to captain in 1898. He retired as a major in October 1903, but was recalled to active duty in 1917 to teach Military Science. He retired again in 1920 and died in December 1922 at San Diego, California.

VROOM, PETER DUMONT: Born in New Jersey in 1842, he was appointed  a first lieutenant in the 1st New Jersey Infantry in August 1862. He was appointed a major in the 2nd New Jersey Cavalry in September 1863 and was mustered out in October 1865. In February 1866, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in July 1866 and to captain in 1876. He served at Fort Davis from May 1885 to July 1886 in command of Troop L of that regiment. He was promoted to major in 1888 in the Inspector General’s Office, to lieutenant colonel in 1895, and to colonel in 1899. Promoted to brigadier general on April 11, 1903, he retired the following day. He died in March 1926 at Trenton, New Jersey.
