Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

SAFFORD, ROBERT ELIEL: Born in Ohio, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis with Troop C of the 10th from August 1878 to July 1879. He died in July 1879 while on active duty of acute dysentery.

SAGE, WILLIAM HAMPDEN: Born in New York, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1882. He  was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to  the 5th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with Company F of the 5th Infantry from August 1890 to January 1890 when he was promoted to first lieutenant. He then served at Fort Davis with Company E of the 23rd Infantry until April 1891. He was promoted to captain in the 14th Infantry in April 1898, transferring to the 23rd Infantry in November of that year. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in June 1899 for actions near the Zapote River in the Philippines.

SANBORN, WASHINGTON IRVING: Born in Maine, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the Washington Territorial Infantry in October 1862, mustering out in August 1865. He was appointed a captain and served as the assistant adjutant general of volunteers in 1865-1866. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 13th Infantry in May 1866, he was promoted to first lieutenant in February 1869. He was assigned to the 25th Infantry in 1870, and served at Fort Davis from April 1871 to July 1873 with Company G of the 25th Infantry. He was promoted to captain in1884 and retired with the rank of major in 1898.

SAYRE, FARRAND: Born in Missouri in 1861, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1884 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from November 1887 to May 1888 with Troop A, 8th Cavalry.  He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1891 and to captain in 1899. He retired in 1925 as a brigadier general and died in April 1952.

SCHOOLEY, DAVID: Born in Pennsylvania, he was appointed a captain in the 2nd Pennsylvania Artillery in August 1862, mustering out as a major in January 1866. He was appointed a captain in the 40th Infantry in July 1866, transferring to the 25th Infantry in April 1869. He served at Fort Davis from August 1872 to July 1877, and again from March 1878 to May 1880 in command of Company E, 25th Infantry. He retired in April 1888.

SCHREINER, HERMAN: Born in Pennsylvania, he was appointed a captain in the Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers in August 1862 mustering out in May 1866. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 11th Infantry in February 1866, transferring to the 20th Infantry seven months later. He was promoted to first lieutenant in November 1866, and assigned to the 9th Cavalry in December 1870. He served at Fort Davis as the first lieutenant of Company I, 9th Cavalry from June 1871 to February 1872.  He was promoted to captain, effective December1871, and retired in March 1879.

SCHWENK, SAMUEL KLINGER: Born in Pennsylvania, he was appointed a first lieutenant in the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry in September 1861, mustering out in July 1865 as a lieutenant colonel. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 41st Infantry in July 1866, he was promoted to captain in 1867. He served at Fort Davis with the 41st in June and July 1868 in command of Company B. He retired in May 1876.

SCOTT, WALTER SEYMOUR: Born in Arkansas, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 25th Infantry in October 1874 and served at Fort Davis from October 1875 to July 1879 with Company H of that regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and to captain in 1891. He was promoted to major in the 4th Infantry in1899 and lieutenant colonel of the 18th Infantry in 1903.

SEAWELL, WASHINGTON: Born in Virginia in 1802, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1825 and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the 7th Infantry. By February 1852, he was the lieutenant colonel in the 8th Infantry and in 1854, with six companies of the 8th Infantry, he established the first Fort Davis. Seawell served as the post’s commander until July 1860. He was promoted to colonel of the 6th Infantry in October 1860 and retired in February 1862. He died in January 1888.

SHAFTER, WILLIAM RUFUS: Born in Michigan in1835, he was appointed a first lieutenant in the 7th Michigan Infantry in August 1861. In April 1864, he was promoted to colonel of the 17th U.S. Colored Infantry and was awarded the Medal of Honor for most distinguished gallantry in the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia.  He was appointed the lieutenant colonel of the 41st Infantry in July 1866, transferring to the 24th Infantry in April 1869. He served at Fort Davis as the lieutenant colonel of the 24th Infantry from May 1871 to May 1872. He was promoted to colonel of the 1st Infantry in March 1879 and served again at Fort Davis from March 1881 to May 1882 as colonel of the 1st and as post commander. He was promoted to brigadier general in May 1897. He retired for age in October 1899 and died in November 1906 near Bakersfield, California.

SHERIDAN, ANDREW: Born in Pennsylvania, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 3rd Infantry in March 1861. He was promoted to first lieutenant two months later and to captain in 1863. Assigned to the 24th Infantry in January 1871, he served at Fort Davis from February to May 1871 in command of Company B of that regiment. He resigned from the army in January 1877.

SHIPP, WILLIAM EWEN: Born in North Carolina, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1883 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from September 1883 to April 1885 with Troop H, 10th Cavalry.  He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1889 and was killed-in-action in July 1898 in Cuba during the assault on San Juan Hill.

SHUNK, WILLIAM ALEXANDER: Born in Indiana, he graduated from the U.S. Military in 1879. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1885 and served at Fort Davis from October 1887 to May 1888 as the first lieutenant of Troop D of that regiment. He was promoted to captain in 1892 and to major in June 1902.

SIMPSON, JAMES FERDINAND: Born in Massachusetts in 1841, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 14th Connecticut Infantry in August 1862, mustering out as a captain in November 1864. He served as captain in the U. S. Veterans Volunteer Infantry from February 1865 to March 1866. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 40th Infantry in 1867, transferring to the 25th Infantry in 1869. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1877 while serving in the 3rd Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from May 1885 to August 1886 as the first lieutenant of Troop F, 3rd Cavalry, and from August 1886 to January 1877 as captain of Troop M. He retired in November 1887 and died in June 1899 at Prescott, Arizona.

SIMPSON, WENDELL LEE: Born in New York in 1859, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1884 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from May to July1885 with Troop I, 3rd Cavalry.  He was promoted to first lieutenant, 20th Infantry, in 1891 and to captain in the 14th Infantry in 1898. He retired for disability in September 1912 as the lieutenant colonel of the 15th Infantry and died in April 1913 at Garden City, New York.

SKINNER, JOHN OSCAR: Born in Maryland, he entered the army in November 1874 as an assistant surgeon and served at Fort Davis from May 1890 to June 1891 in that capacity. He was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, in 1892 and retired in October 1893.

SMITH, FREDERIC WILLIAM: Born in Massachusetts, he enlisted as a private in the 8th Massachusetts Militia in April 1861, mustering out in July 1866 as a first lieutenant in the 1st U. S. Colored Cavalry. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in July 1866 and a first lieutenant in July 1867. He served at Fort Davis from April 1868 to March 1869 with Troop K, 9th Cavalry. He died in December 1869 while on active duty.

SMITH, JACOB HURD: Born in Ohio, he was appointed a first lieutenant in the 2nd Kentucky Infantry in June 1861, mustering out in October 1865. Appointed a captain in the 13th Infantry in March 1867, he transferred to the 19th Infantry in December 1870. He served at Fort Davis from October to December 1889 in command of Company D of that regiment. He was promoted to major in the 2nd Infantry in 1894, to lieutenant colonel of the 12th Infantry in 1898, and to colonel of the 17th Infantry in 1899.  In 1901 he was promoted to brigadier general and he retired in 1902.

SMITH, LARKIN: Born in Virginia, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in July 1835 and assigned to the 3rd Infantry. He was promoted to second lieutenant three months later. In July 1838, he was promoted to first lieutenant in the 8th Infantry. He was promoted to captain in 1846 and served at Fort Davis from March 1857 to May 1858 in command of Company A, 8th Infantry. He resigned in May 1861 to accept a colonel’s position as the Assistant Quartermaster General of the Confederate States Army. He died in December 1884.

SMITH, THOMAS MAC KIE: Born in Pennsylvania in 1842, he enlisted as a private in the 17th Infantry in March 1864. Four months later he was appointed a second lieutenant and a first lieutenant in the 17th Infantry. Transferring to the 26th Infantry in 1866, he was promoted to captain the following year. He served at Fort Davis from May 1890 to May 1891 in command of Company D of the 23rd Infantry. He was promoted to major in the 1st Infantry in 1894 and to the lieutenant colonel of the 10th Infantry in 1898. He retired in 1899 and died in 1901 at Portland, Oregon.

SMITH, WILLIAM HARVEY: Born in Missouri, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1883. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from September 1883 to July 1884 with Troop I, 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1890. In July 1898, he was killed while leading his men in an assault on San Juan Hill.

SMITHER, ROBERT GENO: Born in Indiana in 1846, he enlisted in the 26th Indiana Infantry in July 1861, two months before his fifteenth birthday.  He was mustered out in November 1862, but eight months later, he enlisted as a sergeant in the 7th Indiana Cavalry. He mustered out in February 1866 and was appointed a first lieutenant in the 10th Cavalry in June 1867. He was promoted to captain in November 1881, and served at Fort Davis and its sub-posts from June 1882 to April 1885 as the captain of Troop B, the 10th Cavalry. He retired for disability in May 1888 and died in February 1923 at San Francisco, California.

STARR, CHARLES GRENVILLE: Born in Illinois in 1857, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1878 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 1st Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from April 1881 to July 1882 with Company F, 1st Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in September 1883, to captain in 1895, and to major with the 25th Infantry in 1901. He retired as the lieutenant colonel of the 8th Infantry in 1906 and died in July 1918 at San Antonio, Texas.

STARR, IRWIN M.: Born in New York, he enlisted as a private in the 3rd New York Cavalry in July 1864 mustering out of the Civil War in November 1865. He was appointed a second lieutenant with the 9th Cavalry in July 1867. He served at Fort Davis from December 1867 to May 1868 with Company H of the 9th.  He was promoted to first lieutenant, Company C, 9th Cavalry in 1869 and served with that company at Fort Davis from March 1870 to April 1871. He died in April 1875.

STEELE, MATTHEW FORNEY: Born in Alabama, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1883 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from November 1887 to May 1888 with Troop F, 8th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant, 4th Cavalry, in March 1891, transferring back to the 8th Cavalry a month later. He was promoted to captain, 6th Cavalry, in March 1899.

STEEVER, EDGAR ZELL: Born in Pennsylvania in 1849, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1871 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1878 and served at Fort Davis from May 1885 to January 1886 as the post adjutant. He was promoted to captain effective January 1886. He was promoted to major in 1899 and to lieutenant colonel of the 9th Cavalry in 1902. He transferred back to the 3rd Cavalry later that year and was assigned to the Adjutant General Department in 1903. He was retired for disability in March 1913 and died in January 1920 at Washington, D.C.

STIVERS, EDWIN JACOB: Born in Ohio, he enlisted as a private and fifer in the 89th Illinois Infantry in 1862.  He mustered out in December 1863 to accept an appointment as a second lieutenant in the 17th U.S. Colored Infantry. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 40th Infantry in July 1866, he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1868 and transferred to the 25th Infantry in April 1969.  He served at Fort Davis from November 1872 to July 1877 with Companies D and E of that regiment. He was promoted to captain in 1883 and retired in February 1891.

STOCKTON, PHILIP: Born in New Jersey, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1852 and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Infantry. He was promoted to second lieutenant in 1853 and served at Fort Davis from October 1854 to May 1855 with Company A of that regiment. He transferred to the 1st Cavalry in March 1855 and was promoted to first lieutenant in October of that year. He resigned in February 1861 to accept an appointment as a colonel of Ordnance in the Confederate States Army. He died in March 1879.

STROTHER, LOUIS HARVIE: Born in Virginia in 1855, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1877 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 1st Infantry in 1879. He served at Fort Davis from March 1881 to March 1882 as the regimental quartermaster and with Company I of that regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1885 and to captain in 1898. He transferred to the 22nd Infantry in 1899 and to the 26th Infantry in 1903, the same year he was promoted to major. He died in January 1908 at Washington, D.C.

SUTHERLAND, CHARLES: Born in Pennsylvania, he entered the army in August 1852 as an assistant surgeon and served at Fort Davis from October 1858 to May 1860 in that capacity. In 1862, he was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, and in 1866 he was promoted to assistant medical purveyor, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1876 he was promoted to colonel and in 1890 he became the Surgeon General of the Army, having been promoted to brigadier general. He retired in May 1893. 

SWAIN, HUGH: Born in Texas, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1890 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 23rd Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from October 1890 to May 1891 with Company G of that regiment. He resigned in 1893, but was reinstated as a major in the 2nd U. S. Volunteer Infantry in 1898. He was mustered out of the army in June 1899.
