RANDAL, HORACE: Born in Tennessee in 1833, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1854 and was assigned to the 8th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from April to July 1855 as a brevet second lieutenant with Company C of that regiment. He was promoted to second lieutenant in the 1st Dragoons effective March 1855. He resigned in February 1861 to serve in the Confederate States Army where he ascended to the rank of brigadier general before being killed in action at Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas, in April 1864.
READ, EDWIN W. H.: Born in Ohio, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 8th Infantry in June 1856 and served at Fort Davis with the 8th from February to June 1857 with Company C. He was promoted to first lieutenant in May 1861 and to captain a month later. He resigned in May 1873 and died in November 1875.
READ, ROBERT DODDRIDGE: Born in Tennessee in 1854, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from February 1878 to August 1882 with Troop K of the 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1884, to captain in 1893, and to major in 1903. He retired for disability in August 1914 as the colonel of the 2nd Cavalry. He died in December 1919 at San Francisco, California.
READE, HARRY: Born in Massachusetts, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 25th Infantry in March 1872 and served at Fort Davis with the 25th from November 1872 to July 1876 with Company D. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1878 and to captain in 1888. He retired in November 1890.
REED, HARVEY DREW: Born in New York, he enlisted as a private in an engineer battalion in June 1876. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 25th Infantry in August 1879 and served at Fort Davis with the 25th from November 1879 to May 1880 with Company E. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1886 and resigned from the army in June 1890.
REED, THOMAS BENTON: Born in Pennsylvania, he enlisted as a sergeant in the 5th Pennsylvania Reserve in June 1861. He mustered out in March 1863 to accept an appointment as a first lieutenant in the same regiment. He was appointed a captain in the 205th Pennsylvania Infantry in 1864. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 29th Infantry in July 1867. He was assigned to the 9th Cavalry in 1869, transferring to the 24th Infantry in February 1870. He served at Fort Davis from November 1869 to May 1870 as the officer in charge of the commissary and with Company B of the 24th Infantry. He retired in November 1871.
REMINGTON, PHILIP HALSEY: Born in Connecticut, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 8th Infantry in June 1861. He was promoted to first lieutenant in August 1861, and to captain in 1866. He transferred to the 19th Infantry in December 1869 and served at Fort Davis with the 19th in command of Company F in November and December 1889. He retired in February 1891 and died in December 1891.
REYNOLDS, BAINBRIDGE: Born in New York in 1849, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1873. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and served at Fort Davis with the 3rd Cavalry in January and February 1886 as the first lieutenant of Troop E. He was promoted to captain in 1889 and resigned in 1891. He died in July 1901 at Washington, D.C.
RIPLEY, HENRY LEWIS: Born in Massachusetts, he enlisted as a private in an engineer battalion in April 1876. He mustered out in July 1879 to accept an appointment as a second lieutenant in the 24th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1884 and transferred to the 3rd Cavalry in February 1887. He served at Fort Davis from July to October 1887 as the first lieutenant of Troop I, 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to captain in 1895 and to major with the 8th Cavalry in 1903.
RITZIUS, HENRY PAUL: Born in Prussia, he enlisted as a private in the 5th New York State Militia in 1861, mustering out in August 1864 as a captain in the 52nd New York Infantry. He then served as a major in the same unit in 1864-1865 and as a first lieutenant in the 7th U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry in 1865-1866. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 39th Infantry in October 1867, transferring to the 25th Infantry in April 1869. Promoted to first lieutenant in 1875, he served at Fort Davis with the 25th Infantry from January 1878 to May 1880 as the regimental and post quartermaster. He was promoted to captain in 1887 and retired with the rank of major in March 1899.
RIVERS, TYREE RODES: Born in Mississippi in 1862, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1883 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from May to August 1885 with Troop H, 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1889 and to captain in the 4th Cavalry in 1898. He died in January 1923 while on active duty as a colonel at Governor’s Island, New York.
ROBINSON, GEORGE: Born in New York, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 123rd New York Infantry in September 1862, mustering out in June 1865. He returned to the army in March 1877 as a chaplain and served at Fort Davis from May 1890 to May 1891 as the post chaplain with the rank of captain. He was assigned to the 1st Infantry in 1901.
ROSE, ROBERT WELDON: Born in Virginia, he enlisted as a private in the 16th Infantry in September 1883, mustering out in March 1889 as a sergeant to accept an appointment as a second lieutenant in the 5th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with the 5th from April 1889 to August 1890 with Company I. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the17th Infantry in 1896 and to captain with the 21st infantry in 1899.
RUCKER, LOUIS HENRY: Born in Illinois, he enlisted as a private in the Chicago Dragoons in April 1861 and served with various units during the Civil War. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in July 1866 and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1867. He served at Fort Davis with the 9th from July 1867 to February 1869 as the first lieutenant of Troop F. He was promoted to captain in 1879 and to major in the 4th Cavalry in 1897. He retired in April 1903 as a brigadier general.
RUSSELL, GERALD: Born in Ireland, he enlisted as a private in the Mounted Rifles in July 1851 and served until 1862 when he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1864 and to captain in 1867. He served at Fort Davis from May 1885 to February 1886 in command of Troop K, 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to major, transferring to the 5th Cavalry, in 1888 and retired in 1890.
