Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

O’CONNOR, CHARLES MALLON: Born in Iowa, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1873. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1881 and served at Fort Davis as the regimental adjutant of the 8th Cavalry and as the post adjutant from October 1887 to May 1888. He was promoted to captain in 1891 and to major with the 14th Cavalry in 1901.

O’CONNOR, STEPHEN: Born in New York in 1837, he enlisted as a private in the 8th Infantry in June 1860. He was discharged in March 1867 to accept an appointment (effective December 1866) as a second lieutenant in the 8th Infantry. He was assigned to the 23rd Infantry in 1870. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1886, and served at Fort Davis from August 1890 to May 1891 with Company G, 23rd Infantry. He was promoted to captain in 1897 and retired in April 1900. He died in November 1914 at Little Moore Sanitarium in California.

ORD, JAMES CRESAP: Born in Michigan, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 25th Infantry in October 1873. He served at Fort Davis from March 1875 to August 1877 with Company K, 25th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in March 1879 and to captain in 1890. He retired in June 1899 with the rank of major.

OTIS, ELMER: Born in Massachusetts, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1853 and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry. He was promoted to second lieutenant, transferring to the 4th Infantry, and then to the 1st Cavalry in 1855.  He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1856 and to captain in May 1861. He transferred to the 4th Cavalry in August 1861 and was appointed a major in the 1st Cavalry in 1864. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 7th Cavalry in 1876. He became colonel of the 8th Cavalry in 1883 and served at Fort Davis as post commander from October 1887 to May 1888. He retired in February 1891 and died in August 1897.

OVENSHINE, SAMUEL: Born in Pennsylvania, he was appointed a second lieutenant and then a first lieutenant in the 5th Infantry in August 1861. He was promoted to captain in 1864 and to major, assigned to the 23rd Infantry, in July 1885. He served at Fort Davis with the 23rd Infantry from May 1890 to March 1891. He retired in October 1899 as a brigadier general.
