Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

NIXON, JOHN BENTON: Born in Vermont, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 102nd Illinois Infantry in September 1862, and mustered out in November 1866 as the lieutenant colonel of the 17th U.S. Colored Infantry. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 38th Infantry in June 1867, he transferred to the 24th Infantry in November 1869. He was promoted to captain in 1877 and served at Fort Davis from July to November 1880 in command of Company B, 24th Infantry. He retired in November 1884 and died in July 1898.

NOBLE, CHARLES HENRY: Born in Ohio, he enlisted as a private in the 1st Indiana Cavalry in June 1861 and mustered out as a corporal in June 1864. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 16th Infantry in February 1866, he transferred to the 34th Infantry in September 1866. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1867 and transferred back to the 16th Infantry in 1869. He served with the 16th at Fort Davis from February to March 1881 with Company D. He was promoted to captain in 1884, to major of the 25th Infantry in 1898, to lieutenant colonel of the 16th Infantry in 1901, and in June 1902 he was appointed colonel of the 10th Infantry.

NOLAN, NICHOLAS: Born in Ireland, he enlisted as a private in the 4th Artillery in December 1852. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 6th Cavalry in 1862 and a first lieutenant in 1864. He was promoted to captain, transferring to the 10th Cavalry, in July 1866.  He served at Fort Davis and its sub-posts from October 1880 to January 1883 as the captain of Troop A, 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to major in the 3rd Cavalry effective December 1882, and died on active duty, while serving as the post commander of Fort Apache, Arizona Territory, in October 1883.

NORDSTROM, CHARLES EBEN: Born in Maine, he enlisted as a private in the 1st Maine Cavalry in August 1862 and mustered out in May 1865. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 10th Cavalry in June 1867 and promoted to first lieutenant in 1869. He served at Fort Davis with Troop A, 10th Cavalry, from November 1880 to September 1881 and again from August 1882 to December 1884. He was promoted to captain in 1889 and died in January 1898 at Santa Fe, New Mexico.

NORMOYLE, JAMES EDWARD: Born in Michigan, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1889. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 23rd Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with Company B, 23rd Infantry, from June 1890 to May 1891. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the 25th Infantry in January 1897, transferring to the 5th Infantry six months later. He was promoted to captain in September 1899.

NORVELL, STEVENS THOMPSON: Born in Michigan, he enlisted as a private in the 5th Infantry in January 1858 and mustered out in February 1863 as a first sergeant to accept an appointed as a second lieutenant in the 13th Infantry. He transferred to the 31st Infantry in 1866 and was promoted to captain in1868. He was assigned to the 10th Cavalry in 1870 and served at Fort Davis from August 1882 to April 1883 in command of Troop M, 10th Cavalry.  He returned to Fort Davis briefly in July 1883. He was promoted to major in 1890 and to lieutenant colonel of the 9th Cavalry in 1898. He retired in February 1899.
