Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

MACLAY, ROBERT PLUNKET: Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1840. He was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant and assigned to the 6th Infantry. Three months later, he was promoted to second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1845 and to captain in 1849. He served at Fort Davis from October 1854 to July 1858, in command of Company F, 8th Infantry. He resigned in December 1860 to join the army of the Confederate States of America. He attained the rank of brigadier general in the Confederate States Army.

MARSTELLER, JAMES S.: Born in Virginia, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 24th Infantry in January 1875. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and served at Fort Davis in August and September 1880 as the first lieutenant of Company B, 24th Infantry. He was killed in a hunting accident in October 1884.

MASON, JOHN SANFORD, JR.: Born in California, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry in September 1879 and served at Fort Davis from August 1881 to May 1882 with Company B.  He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1886. He died on active duty at Pine Ridge, South Dakota in February 1891.

MAXON, MASON MARION: Born in Wisconsin in 1847, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1869. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1875 and served at Fort Davis from August 1882 to April 1885 with the 10th Cavalry as the post quartermaster and regimental quartermaster.  He was promoted to captain in 1889 and retired in 1891. He died in May 1934 at Cincinnati, Ohio.

McCLURE, DANIEL: Born in Indiana, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1849 and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the Mounted Rifles, resigning in November 1850. Commissioned a major in the position of Paymaster in October 1858, he served at Fort Davis in February 1859 in that capacity. He was promoted to colonel and assistant paymaster general in July 1866. He retired in December 1888 and died in October 1900.

McDONALD, ISAIAH HEYLIN: Born in Ohio, he enlisted as a private in the 134th Ohio Infantry and served from May to August 1864. In 1869, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 9th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis with Company I, 9th Cavalry, from June 1871 to July 1873, when he resigned from the army.

McFARLAND, WILLIAM CAMPBELL: Born in Ohio, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1872 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 16th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with the 16th Infantry as a second lieutenant with Company E from January to March 1881, from June 1883 to May 1885 as a first lieutenant (having been promoted to first lieutenant in July 1882) with Company I, and again with Company I from July 1886 to January 1888. He was promoted to captain in 1892 and retired in May 1899.

McLAUGHLEN, NAPOLEON BONAPARTE: Born in Vermont, he enlisted as a private in the 2nd Dragoons in May 1851 and mustered out in August 1865 as a colonel in the 57th Massachusetts Infantry. He was appointed a major in the 10th Cavalry in May 1876 and served at Fort Davis from October 1879 to May 1881 as the post commander and ordnance officer. He retired in June 1882 and died in January 1887.

MERRITT, CHARLES W.: Born in Illinois, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in October 1873 and served at Fort Davis from March 1874 to April 1875 with Company I of that regiment.  He was dismissed from the army in November 1879 and died in December 1879.

MERRITT, WESLEY: Born in New York, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1860 and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the 2nd Dragoons. He was promoted to second lieutenant in January 1861, to first lieutenant in May 1861, and to captain in 1862. In 1866, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 9th Cavalry.  In July 1867, he re-established Fort Davis and served as post commander until September 1869. In 1876, he became colonel of the 5th Cavalry. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1887 and to major general in 1895. He retired in 1900 and died in 1910.

MILLS, ANSON: Born in Indiana in 1834, he attended the U.S. Military Academy from July 1855 to February 1857. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 18th Infantry in May of 1861, he was promoted to captain in 1863. He transferred to the 3rd Cavalry in 1870. He was promoted to major in the 10th Cavalry in April 1878. He served with the 10th Cavalry at Fort Davis from August 1882 to April 1885. He was appointed lieutenant colonel of the 4th Cavalry in 1890, and colonel of the 3rd Cavalry in 1892. He retired in June 1897, six days after being promoted to brigadier general. He died in November 1924 at Washington D.C.

MOFFATT, ISAAC F.: Born in Canada, he enlisted as a private in the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry in October 1861, mustering out in August 1865 as a captain. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in July 1866, he served at Fort Davis with Company H, 9th Cavalry, from July 1867 to February 1869.  He died in October 1870.

MORGAN, GEORGE HORACE: Born in Canada in 1855, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1880 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He received the Medal of Honor for distinguished conduct in the engagement at Big Dry Wash (Arizona) in July 1882. He served at Fort Davis from June1885 to September 1887 with Company K and again from October 1890 to March 1891 with Company F, 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to captain in 1896. He retired for age in January 1919, as the colonel of the 15th Cavalry and died in February 1948 at Washington, D.C.

MORRISON, JOHN TOWAR: Born in New York in 1838, he enlisted as a private in the 1st Minnesota Infantry in April 1861. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 2nd Minnesota Cavalry in October 1863, he mustered out in November 1865. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 10th Cavalry in March 1867 and promoted to first lieutenant four months later. He served at Fort Davis in August and September 1882 as the post adjutant and regimental adjutant of the 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to captain in December 1882 and took command of Troop A, 10th Cavalry in February 1883. He remained at Fort Davis until November 30, 1884. He retired in December 1887 and died in May 1920 at Berkeley, California.

MULLINS, GEORGE GATEWOOD: Born in Kentucky, he entered the army in January 1875 as the Regimental Chaplain of the 25th Infantry and served at Fort Davis from April 1875 to December 1879 in that capacity. He retired in February 1891.

MYER, ALBERT JAMES: Born in New York, he entered the army in September 1854 as an assistant surgeon and served at Fort Davis from January to November 1855 in that capacity. In June 1860, Myer was promoted to major and appointed chief signal officer of the army.  He was promoted to colonel in 1866 and died in August 1880 while on active duty as a brigadier general while still serving as the chief signal officer.
