Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

LANDON, HENRY HUTTON: Born in New York, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1872 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 25th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with Company E of the 25th Infantry from July 1872 to July 1877. He returned to Fort Davis with Company E in March 1878. He was promoted to first lieutenant in June 1878 and transferred to Company I. He served with Company I at Fort Davis until January 1880. He resigned in June 1880. He was appointed a major with the 4th U.S. Volunteer Infantry in June 1898, but resigned six months later.

LANE, JAMES HENRY: Born in Indiana, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 25th Infantry in October 1875 and served at Fort Davis from September 1876 to August 1878 with Company A of that regiment. He was dismissed from the army in April 1881.

LAUDERDALE, JOHN VANCE: Born in New York in 1832 he entered the army during the Civil War as a contract surgeon. He served at Fort Davis from May 1888 to April 1890 as the post surgeon. He retired for age, in the rank of major, in November 1896 and died in January 1931 at Brooklyn, New York.

LAWSON, GAINES: Born In Tennessee, he enlisted as a private in the 4th Tennessee Infantry in December 1862. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for most distinguished gallantry in action at McMinnville, Tennessee in 1863. He was appointed a captain in the 39th Infantry in July 1866, transferring to the 25th Infantry in April 1869. He served at Fort Davis in command of Company I, 25th Infantry, from June 1875 to September 1878. He retired with the rank of major in September 1892.

LEBO, THOMAS COVERLY: Born in Pennsylvania in 1842, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry in April 1861 and mustered out in August 1865 as a captain in the 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry. He was appointed a first lieutenant in the 10th Cavalry in 1867 and promoted to captain in 1876. He served at Fort Davis from February 1878 to April 1885 in command of Troop K, 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to major of the 6th Cavalry in 1893, to lieutenant colonel of the 1st Cavalry in 1899, and colonel of the 14th Cavalry in 1902. He retired as a brigadier general in 1905 and died in February 1910 at Chicago, Illinois.

LEE, ARTHUR TRACY: Born in Pennsylvania, in 1814, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 5th Infantry in October 1838. He transferred to the 8th Infantry in November 1838. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1845 and to captain in 1848. He served at Fort Davis with the 8th Infantry from October 1854 to September 1858 in command of Company C.  As an artist, his sketches and paintings provide the best views of the first Fort Davis. He was promoted to major in the 2nd Infantry in 1861. He retired in July 1866, with the rank of colonel, and died in December 1879.

LIGGETT, HUNTER: Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1879. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and was assigned to the 5th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1884 and served at Fort Davis from August 1890 to June 1891 as the first lieutenant of Company F, 5th Infantry.  He was promoted to captain in 1897 and to major in the 21st Infantry in 1902.

LOUD, JOHN SYLVANUS: Born in New York, he enlisted as a private in the 7thYork National Guard in May 1862. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 12th New York Cavalry in January 1863, he mustered out in June 1865. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in January 1867 and a first lieutenant in July 1867. He served at Fort Davis with the 9th, from October 1868 to November 1871, as a first lieutenant and post and regimental adjutant. He was promoted to captain in 1880 and to major with the 3rd Cavalry in 1897. He retired in 1898.

LYMAN, CHARLES GEORGE: Born in New York, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1886 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 5th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from September 1888 to January 1889 as a second lieutenant with Company I, 5th Infantry. He transferred to the 2nd Cavalry in 1889 and retired, with the rank of first lieutenant, in May 1896.
