Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

KELLIHER, PATRICK: Born in Ireland, he enlisted as a private in the 2nd Infantry in July 1866. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 39th Infantry in November 1868, he transferred to the 25th Infantry in April 1869. He served at Fort Davis with Company I, 25th Infantry, from June 1875 until his death from consumption in February 1876.

KELLOGG, WILLIAM LUCIUS: Born in Ohio, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 10th Infantry in August 1861. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1863, to captain in 1864, and to major in the 19th Infantry in 1884. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 5th Infantry in July 1890 and served at Fort Davis as post commander from October 1890 to May 1891. He was promoted to colonel in 1895 and died in April 1897.

KENDALL, FREDERICK AUGUSTUS: Born in New Hampshire, he enlisted as a private in the 11th Indiana Infantry in June 1861 and transferred in August 1861 to accept an appointment as a second lieutenant in the 4th New Hampshire Infantry. He was appointed a captain in the 8th U.S. Colored Artillery in October 1865. In July 1866, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 40th Infantry, transferring to the 25th Infantry, with the rank of first lieutenant, in April 1869. He served at Fort Davis with Company E, 25th Infantry, from May 1872 to July 1876. He was promoted to captain in 1879 and retired in December 1884.

KEYES, ALEXANDER SCAMMEL BROOKS: Born in Massachusetts in 1846, he enlisted as a private in the 59th Massachusetts Infantry in October 1863. He mustered out in June 1864, as the sergeant major, to accept an appointment as a second lieutenant in the Massachusetts Artillery. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 12th Infantry in February 1866, transferring to the 30th Infantry later that year. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1867 and assigned to the 10th Cavalry in 1870. He was promoted to captain in 1873and served at Fort Davis from August 1882 to April 1885 in command of Troop D. Promoted to major in the 3rd Cavalry in 1892, he retired in August 1896. In 1904, he was advanced to lieutenant colonel. He died in July 1909 at San Diego, California.

KNIGHT, JOHN THORNTON: Born in Virginia in 1861, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1884 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from May to November 1885 with Company E, 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1891, to captain in the quartermaster department in 1896, and to major in 1903. He retired a brigadier general in April 1925 and died in January 1930 at San Francisco, California.
