JAMES, WILLIAM HENRY WILLIAMS: Born in Tennessee, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1872. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 24th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1878 and served at Fort Davis with the 24th from June to October 1880 as a first lieutenant and post adjutant. He was promoted to captain in 1890, and to major in the 23rd Infantry in 1899. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 24th in 1902 and transferred to the 25th Infantry in 1903.
JOHNSON, CARTER PAGE: Born in Virginia, he enlisted as a private in the 3rd Cavalry in September 1876 and served until March 1882 when he was mustered out to accept an appointment as a second lieutenant in the 4th Infantry. He transferred to the 10th Cavalry in September 1883 and served with the 10th at Fort Davis from September 1884 to April 1885 with Troop L. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1890 and to captain in 1899.
JOHNSON, FRANKLIN OLIVER: Born in Minnesota, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1881 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 3rd Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis in June and July of 1885 with Company D, 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant effective January 1885 and to captain in June 1896.
JONES, THADDEUS WINFIELD: Born in North Carolina in 1848, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1872 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and served at Fort Davis from May 1882 to April 1885 with Troop B, 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to captain in 1891 and to major with the 13th Cavalry in 1901. He became the lieutenant colonel of the 7th Cavalry in 1905 and the colonel of the 10th Cavalry in 1909. He retired in 1912 and died in March 1939 at Long Beach, California.
JONES, THOMAS MARSHALL: Born in Virginia, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1853 and was assigned to the 8th Infantry. He served with the 8th Infantry at Fort Davis from December 1855 to July 1860 as a second lieutenant with Company G and as a first lieutenant with Company A. He resigned in February 1861 to serve as a colonel in the Confederate States Army and rose to the rank of brigadier general.
JORDAN, CHARLES DOWNES: Born in Massachusetts, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1842. He was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Infantry. He was promoted to second lieutenant with the 1st Infantry in January 1844. He transferred back to the 8th Infantry in July 1844 and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1846. He was promoted to captain in 1851 and served at Fort Davis from October 1854 to April 1859 in command of Company D, 8th Infantry. He retired, with the rank of major, in August 1863 and died in January 1876.
JOUETT, JAMES STOCKETT: Born in Kentucky, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 10th Infantry in January 1875. He transferred to the 10th Cavalry in February 1877 and served at Fort Davis and its sub-posts from November 1881 to April 1885 as a second lieutenant and a first lieutenant (having been promoted to first lieutenant in February 1883) with Company I, 10th Cavalry. He was dismissed from the army in 1885, but was reinstated in 1888 to rank of February 1883. He resigned in January 1889.
