Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

ILIFF, JAMES A.: Born in New Jersey in 1845, he enlisted as a private in the 132nd Indiana Volunteers in May 1864. He transferred to the 109th U.S. Colored Infantry in February 1865 with the rank of sergeant major. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the same regiment in October 1865. He was mustered out in 1866, but accepted an appointment as a second lieutenant in the 41st Infantry in January 1867. He served at Fort Davis from April 1868 to September 1869 with Company B, 41st Infantry. He transferred to the 24th Infantry in November 1869 and was honorably mustered out of the army in January 1871.
