ILIFF, JAMES A.: Born in New Jersey in 1845, he enlisted as a private in the 132^nd Indiana Volunteers in May 1864. He transferred to the 109^th U.S. Colored Infantry in February 1865 with the rank of sergeant major. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the same regiment in October 1865. He was mustered out in 1866, but accepted an appointment as a second lieutenant in the 41^st Infantry in January 1867. He served at Fort Davis from April 1868 to September 1869 with Company B, 41^st Infantry. He transferred to the 24^th Infantry in November 1869 and was honorably mustered out of the army in January 1871.
